The AFRMG is pleased to play a role in developing the presence, and sharing the collections and expertise of RMG in the USA.
The Museum is excited to be staging a growing program of major exhibitions in the US. Recent successes include:
Ships, Clocks and Stars: The Quest for Longitude, tells the extraordinary story of the race to determine longitude at sea. Spurred on by the promise of rich rewards, astronomers, philosophers, and artisans – including John Harrison and his innovative timekeepers – finally solved one of the greatest technical challenges of the 18th century. This exhibition showed at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC from March-September 2015 and at Mystic Seaport from September 2015-March 2016. It was seen by nearly 77,000 visitors whilst at these two US venues.
The acclaimed exhibition Turner and the Sea, exploring the appeal of the sea to J. M. W. Turner and his contemporaries, showed at the Peabody Essex Museum in 2014.
Turmoil and Tranquillity, an exhibition of 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish maritime paintings toured to the Peabody Essex Museum in 2009.
RMG curators and specialists regularly lecture in the US as part of international tours, attend academic conferences and promote publications. Recent talks have taken place at the New York Yacht Club, Vero Beach Art Gallery and US Naval Base Annapolis to name just a few.

Loans from the RMG Collections
